Nordland is the northeastern-most province in Cygnar. It has a population of 4.5 million that is mostly concentrated in the eastern coast near the provincial capital of Neue Emskrank. Western Nordland is a largely rural region, lacking major urban centers and developed infrastructure. On the other hand, eastern Nordland is highly dependent on fishing and whaling, and has a more urbanized landscape, especially near the metropolis of Neue Emskrank. The northern region is very mountainous, while the south is marked by lowlands, due to the presence of the inland sea Kurlavod. Its northern frontiers are marked by a constant warfare against warring tribes of the wildlands that surround Cygnar’s northern frontiers.
Neue Emskrank is the largest Cygnaran port in the eastern coast, and acts as a major shipping center for all trade in the Vitus Ocean. It is also home to major naval installations, which house Cygnar’s 6th naval fleet. Nordland is also home to a major manufacturing belt, which extends from Neue Emskrank until Siegmaringen, in the province south of Nordland.
Nordland was settled by the Thüringens, an ancient tribe native to central southern Promethia, in approximately 4500 BC. It grew into a major seafaring kingdom, which settled colonies all over the coast of the Vitus Ocean, going as far as the coast of nowadays Novairia. After a few millennia after its settling, Nordland was conquered by the Caspians, becoming a part of the Holy Promethian Empire. After its absorption into the Holy Promethian Empire, Nordland became the most important province in the eastern region of Calacia, controlling all shipping in the mouth of the Vitus. After the fall of the Promethian Empire, Nordland fell into decline, and the region changed hands several times until it was conquered by the Cygnarans again in 1907, during the Tarnost Campaign.
