History and Establishment[]
Urbaurum, which translates to English as "Golden City", has been the Capital City of Vjiay - and one of its leading Industrial Cities - since its official 'opening' in 1760.
It is a City that was designed and planned to be perfect. The industrial sprawls that constituted the other cities of Vjiay and the world were seen as somewhat inefficient and haphazard. Blake Blackwell, whose brainchild the 'perfect city' was, committed himself and his company to the design of the city.
The location that was picked already had significant developments on it. The port town of Lemwick was a strong and relatively large conurbation, with a thriving fishing industry but also a growing manufacturing base, thanks to the nearby and readily available materials of the area, indcluding coal, wood and iron. The powerful river Hernan, which is now incorporated into the city, made transport of materials and workers easy and with its long intrusion into the Vjiayan land created multiple trade opportunities with many other towns.
Construction began first on an intricate canal system, which would enable the necessary materials to ensure the further growth of the manufacturing industry in the city. A railway station, still the largest in Vjiay, was also built by Blakewell's own railway company and also immediately began bringing in skilled workers. By 1770 factories producing mostly textiles, but also glass, steel and other heavy materials had sprang up and the population of the city had grown from around 250,000 to over 1.5 million. Thanks to Blakewell's planning though, the vast majority of the population lived in relatively comfortable housing, with each six person family having, in general, at least one floor of a house to live in and upwards of 90% had clean, running water easily attainable. Houses were within easy distance of the occupants place of work and by the turn of the century, Urbaurum had already secured its place in the top five richest Vjiayan cities.
